Healthcare shelter projects must support continuity of care

A hospital cannot be planned as a generic office with the same number of occupants. Patient mobility, medical equipment, water, ventilation, backup power and the operational model of the facility change the technical brief.

Capacity starts with categories of people, not just a headcount

The project should distinguish staff, visitors, mobile patients and people with limited mobility, and should reflect the actual operating mode of the healthcare facility. The applicable shelter capacity and requirements are then confirmed through project-specific design inputs.

Critical engineering systems

  • mechanical ventilation sized for the relevant healthcare scenario;
  • main and backup power for critical loads;
  • water supply and emergency reserves appropriate to the project;
  • sanitary facilities and waste-management arrangements;
  • communications, emergency lighting and fire-safety systems;
  • accessible routes for wheelchair users, stretchers and other mobility needs.

Inputs for an early project review

  • type and operating profile of the healthcare facility;
  • staff and patient numbers for the design period;
  • mobility constraints and special occupant categories;
  • site plan and potential shelter locations;
  • available power, water and sewer connections;
  • required delivery timeline and known design documentation.
