Early technical planning

How much main-room area does the shelter need?

Enter the number of people and select the applicable planning scenario. The calculator estimates the main occupied room only; the complete project area will also include access, sanitary, engineering and other required spaces.

Project inputs

Estimate the main occupied room

Select the scenario that matches the project context. If the applicable regulatory scenario has not yet been confirmed, use the result only as an early planning input.

Preliminary main-room area

Enter project data

Enter the project population and select a scenario. ShelterMetric does not prefill a sample population or choose a facility category for you.

This is not the total area of a completed shelter. Entrances, vestibules, circulation, sanitary rooms, engineering spaces, accessibility zones and other project requirements can increase the overall footprint. *Healthcare scenarios require project-specific interpretation of the occupant categories covered by the selected regulatory scenario.

Calculate capacity from area

The shared passport receives the capacity range and the area scenario in notes. A facility type is written only for scenarios that can be mapped without narrowing a broad category.

Why total shelter area will be larger

The area-per-person input applies to the selected main-room planning scenario. A complete protective structure can also require entrances, vestibules, passages, sanitary areas, ventilation and electrical equipment, backup systems, accessibility zones and other project-specific spaces.
